Cigar Etiquette 101 - What’s Considered Proper?

Smoking a cigar is one of life’s simple pleasures. But like anything worth doing, there’s a right way to go about it.

Whether you’re lighting up on your own or hanging with friends, a little cigar etiquette helps everyone enjoy the moment. It’s not about being fancy or following strict rules. It’s just about being cool, respectful, and easygoing.

Here’s what to keep in mind.

Take Your Time With The Cut

No need to rush. Cutting a cigar should be clean and easy. Grab a proper cutter if you have one, and snip just above the cap. Biting the end off might work in old westerns, but in real life, it just makes a mess.

Toast It First

Before you light up, give the foot of the cigar a nice toast. Hold the flame just under it and rotate slowly. This warms it up and helps you get an even burn once you take that first puff.

I once saw a guy blast his cigar with a torch like he was firing up a barbecue. It didn’t end well. A gentle toast makes all the difference.

Skip The Inhale

This trips up a lot of folks new to cigars. You’re not supposed to inhale the smoke. Just draw it into your mouth, taste it, and let it go. That’s where all the flavor is. It’s more about savoring than smoking.

Let The Ash Hang Out

Cigar ash holds longer than cigarette ash. Let it build up a bit before tapping it off, maybe around an inch or so. No need to flick or bang the cigar. Just a little tap when it feels right.

Be Cool Around Others

If you’re smoking with people, pay attention to where your smoke goes. No one wants a face full of it. Blow it off to the side and keep the vibe friendly.

Be mindful when commenting about someone else’s cigar choice. People like what they like. You’re there to enjoy, and not everyone has the same taste.

Don’t Smash It When You’re Done

When you’re finished, just set the cigar down in the ashtray and let it go out on its own. Don’t mash it like a cigarette. That creates a bad smell and looks a little rough. Letting it rest shows a little respect for the cigar.

Bring Extras If You Can

If you are heading out with friends who smoke, especially for a round of golf, bring a few extra cigars. Someone might forget theirs or want to try something new. It shows you came prepared.

Sharing a cigar adds to the moment. Good smoke, good company, and a few laughs between shots—that is what it is all about.

Offer if you want, never to impress. And do not pressure anyone to join in. A cigar shared freely is always the best kind.

The Last Draw

Cigar etiquette is simple. Be respectful. Be relaxed. Enjoy the moment and let others do the same.

That’s really all there is to it.

So light up, take it slow, and enjoy the good smoke.
