Safety Considerations
When handling butane lighters and refill containers, it's always important to consider the safety precautions:
- Do not use a punctured butane refill container
- Do not refill your butane torch lighter near an open flame, near a heat source, or while you have a lit cigar
- Do not refill your lighter immediately after using it
- Work in a well-ventilated room or open a window
- Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions on the lighter fluid label and the specific lighter as they can vary
- Hold the lighter away from your face and body before lighting the first time after a refill
- Keep butane out of the reach of children
Tools You Need to Refill Your Butane Lighter
Although there are many different types of butane torch lighters, these tools should have you covered.
- Premium butane refill fluid
- Small flat head screwdriver
- Small pointy plastic object
- Butane lighter
7 Easy Steps to Refill a Butane Lighter
Now that you're prepared with all the tools, here are the steps to refill your lighter like a pro.
1. Prepare your work area
Pick a flat, clean table and a room with good ventilation.
In case you have spillage when refilling, place scrap paper or newspaper on the table where you are working.
2. Allow the lighter to cool to room temperature
If you just recently used your butane lighter, let it cool down for at least 10 minutes.
You can put it in the refrigerator for 3-5 minutes for faster cooling.
3. Adjust the flame to its lowest setting by turning the adjustment clockwise
Adjust the flame to the lowest setting by turning the flame adjuster clockwise located at the bottom of the lighter.
Important note: When the adjustment mechanism doesn't turn any more, it is likely at the maximum or minimum setting. Do NOT force the adjustment if it doesn't easily turn.
There are several types of flame adjustments, but here are the most common and how to adjust the height of the flame for each:
- Adjustment dial: Turn the dial clockwise until it doesn't turn any more.
- Adjustment screw within refill valve: The adjustment screw is located at the same spot as the refill valve. Turn the screw clockwise using the key that came with the lighter or a small flat head screwdriver.
- Adjustment screw separate from refill valve: The adjustment screw is not in the same location as the refill valve. The adjustment screw commonly requires a small flat head screwdriver. Turn the adjustment screw counter clockwise until it doesn't turn any more. Note: There are likely Phillips screws on the bottom as well. Do not touch those as they will disassemble the base.
- Adjustment lever: Lift the lever and turn clockwise until it doesn't turn any more.
4. Release the gas by pushing the refill valve with something plastic
Along with butane, there is gas mixed with the butane.
To get the maximum fill in your butane lighter, you want to release some of the gas.
To release the gas, use something plastic and press in the refill valve for 4-6 seconds. You'll hear the hissing sound of compressed air escaping. Stop when the hissing sound is faint or stops completely.
Do not use a metal object as you can damage the valve.
5. Refill with premium butane
Set the lighter upside down on the table.
Using a bottle of premium butane, take off the cap, and hold it upside down with one hand.
With your free hand, hold the lighter on the table in place and push the refill nozzle into the refill valve and hold it for 3-4 seconds. You should feel the refill nozzle push in. Make sure you are not at an angle when pushing. Repeat if necessary, but do not overfill.
6. Rest the lighter for at least 5 minutes before trying to ignite it
Let the lighter sit for at least 5 minutes before you attempt to light it so the fluid can reach room temperature.
7. Adjust the flame to your desired height and test
Adjust the flame back to your desired height by turning the adjustment mechanism counter-clockwise.
Holding your lighter away from your face and body, press the igniter to ensure it's working and the flame height is where you want it.
Butane Lighter Troubleshooting Tips
You've refilled your butane fluid, but no flame came out in your test.
Here are a few quick troubleshooting tips you can try:
- Flame too low: Did you remember to increase the flame setting? Turn the screw or lever counter clockwise to increase the flame.
- Debris or dust in the burner: Gently clean around the burner with a soft brush or compressed air.
- Poor butane quality: Low quality butane can clog the lighter's mechanism. Always use triple refined premium quality butane for the best results.
- Not enough gas release: If there was too much gas left over in the butane reservoir, you may not have enough fluid. Try pressing the refill valve release again and adding more butane fuel.
- Read the manufacturer's instructions: Different models may have specific troubleshooting methods. Refer to the butane lighter's user manual for specific guidance.
