Honoring The Fuente Fuente Opus X and Favorites

In every industry, some names are legendary. The reasons for their status are as many as the different industries themselves. An experience, a level of quality, a dedication to art or craft - each of these things and more can come together in the image of a product or a process that is internationally recognized for its singularity. In the world of cigars and other fine tobaccos, one of these names is Arturo Fuente.

Arturo Fuente Cigars are known, revered, the world over for the completeness of their excellence. In them, one can find the representation of what it means to be an ideal cigar. Their visual aesthetics, their construction and draw, and the expert level of blending they exhibit all coalesce in every Fuente Cigar to bring the smoker a wholly unique experience that engages every sense and pleases the mind and body. Here, we are going to do some honor to the Fuente Fuente Opus X, and some other favorites.

A Short History
The name that is today Arturo Fuente is a storied one that has come through the years elegantly. It all began well over a hundred years ago with the vision of one Arturo Fuente, a Cuban immigrant to Key West, Florida, set out to produce the finest cigars the world had seen.

In 1912, Arturo Fuente himself founded A. Fuente & Company in West Tampa, Florida. Unfortunately, the early years of his venture were plagued with setbacks, including tragic fires and divorce. That did not deter the vision of the Fuente family, however.

Arturo Fuente continued to practice blending and rolling cigars along with the family that he had built, mostly from his own home. He never allowed his setbacks to define him, and also added some new flavor or element to each of his creations. Slowly, over time, and with the help of his family, he began to build his empire - first through local and then through larger accounts.

Today, Arturo Fuente is one of the largest - and most reputable producers of cigars the world over, renowned for their peerless construction and fine blends of rare tobaccos from Nicaragua, The Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and elsewhere. Their collection includes many excellent cigars, including the Fuente Fuente Opus X, which, though it needs no introduction, is due the honor of a showcase.

Fuente Fuente Opus X
The Fuente Fuente Opus X is due the highest regard that one can pay to fine tobacco, and though it can’t be said that any single cigar is better than the next, the Opus X and others in the line can make a strong claim to such titles. The first rule of sampling anything might be “never let anyone else tell you what to like,” but, to cultivate your taste, you do have to broaden your horizons.

And so, if you’ve never tried an Opus X cigar, you should certainly carve out the time to do so. It is a cigar that will not disappoint, even if it does not displace your top spot. Besides, there is room for more than one exhibit in the halls of excellence.

The Dominican Sungrown Habano wrapper that is the hallmark of the Fuente Fuente Opus X is the product of years of labor and vision. While the soils of the region in the Dominican Republic from which it came were once considered unsuitable for the production of fine tobacco, the Fuente family saw to it that history would prove otherwise - and that they did.

To understand its character, one must meet the Chateau de la Fuente farm, tucked away in a valley of mineral-rich soil. This soil, though it was not considered appropriate for the growth of Dominican wrapper tobacco, through the years of dedication of the Fuente family has produced a cultivar of tobacco that has not only been deemed suitable but has achieved legendary notoriety. It, when paired with the binders and fillers that characterize an Opus X, creates one of the finest cigars, if not the finest, that the world has yet known.

The enjoyment of a fine cigar - of any cigar - is truly an in-depth sensory experience that engages and stimulates all of the senses with pleasure. With the Opus X, it starts at first sight. One of their Opus X Cigars like the Corona Gorda presents a rich, deep, albeit somewhat slightly hued brown wrapper. It is not near the dark, nearly black hues of some maduros, nor is it as light as some jade wrappers. It sits firmly in the middle, where it tantalizes the eyes with its pleasantly warm character.

It is equally a joy to physically hold and inspect. It is tightly and expertly rolled and wrapped, without being too tight. It lacks the unpleasant sensation of looseness that other lesser cigars present to the fingers, as well as the rock hard feeling that some cigars offer and has an adverse effect on their draw. The Opus X offers the discrete tobacco aficionado what can nearly be called the perfect roll and draw.

Moving onto the pre-light notes of the cold draw, the cigar offers notes of dried fruits along with a certain element of spiciness. It is sweet without being cloying and piquant, leaving one wondering how the cigar will develop once it is lit.

Lighting the cigar, the first impressions are similar to spices and dried fruits. It offers the pleasant aromas of pepper and other spices, complex enough to defy complete characterization but still definite enough to betray spices, dried fruits, and earth.

As the cigar develops and the smoker progresses through the first third, it becomes even deeper and more intense. In truth, this is one of the most powerful cigars that a cigar smoker could hope to find. As it develops and intensifies, you will have more exposure to the complex blend of spices that make up the foundation of the cigar’s palate. This will all occur without a loss of the accenting sweetness of the overall cigar, and as the cigar unfolds you will even become privy to notes of chocolate and sweet earth.

A Fuente Fuente Opus X will present these flavors as it develops, but just as respectable as its portfolio of flavors is its even, consistent burn. It will produce tight white ash as it burns that will help to mediate the heat and flavor of the smoke and only serves to appreciate the quality of the cigar.

As you can see, this unexampled representation of the excellence of Arturo Fuente cigars will do great justice to its name. It is a pleasure to behold, to feel, to taste and to smoke, from its pre-light notes to its finish. It is pleasant through the entire life of the smoke, and even upon reflection and digestion will grow on the smoker.

It is, without beating around the bush, one of the finest cigars the world has ever known, and though different flavors appeal to different tastes, this is one you should definitely try at least once in your life. If you do ever find yourself lucky enough to be on the receiving, delicious end of one of these Arturo Fuente Cigars, consider yourself fortunate indeed.

Arturo Fuente Opus X 20th
The Arturo Fuente Opus X 20th line, much like many other fine lines of Arturo Fuente cigars, is replete with excellent examples of fine cigars of which the practiced cigar smoker should take full advantage.

Consider a cigar like the Arturo Fuente Opus X 20th Believe Robusto, which is a fine representation of the type of quality you can find in this line. Though this particular cigar is small, do not let its presentation fool you. It is one of the most powerful cigars out there and is very full-bodied. Like the previous cigar, it comes with a Sungrown Dominican Habano Wrapper and is rolled with binders and fillers from the Dominican Republic.

Some might tell you that the wrapper, or the cigar in general, gives off a sweet, woodsy, earthy note before you take a light to it. Like the previously investigated cigar, this model in the line possesses a distinct sweetness that is paired with spicy notes of wood like cedar.

Although powerful, this cigar will become smoother as you enjoy it and develops with notes of woods, earth and leather, without ever giving up the peppery, spicy flavor that you will find with other similar cigars. Like the other, it has a perfect draw and even burn and is an absolute pleasure to smoke.

Arturo Fuente Opus X Angel’s Share
The Arturo Fuente Opus X Angel’s Share is a wonderful version of the Opus X that has been slightly altered to appeal to the different tastes that different smokers exhibit. To characterize the cigar, it is created with slightly different still quality Dominican wrappers to give it a slightly different flavor.

The chief change in this particular cigar from others in the Opus X line is in the wrapper. This cigar will offer a slightly sweeter, less powerful flavor from other Opus X cigars. It was crafted specifically with those in mind whose penchants lead them toward the milder available flavors of tobacco. Ever mindful of their customers, Arturo Fuente responded by crafting these beauties, which like all of their Opus X Cigars offer excellent construction and draw.

Arturo Fuente Opus X OXO Oro Oscuro
If you find that you appreciate the flavors of Arturo Fuente’s Opus X Cigars, then this is another must-try. It is another amazing, expertly blended cigar that is sure to please the senses, even of particular smokers. Its slightly dark Dominican Habano Oscuro Wrapper and binders and fillers from the Dominican Republic are poised to please as well.

Naturally, it bears noting that the construction of these cigars is peerless and like other Opus X cigars are tight without being overdone, and will offer an excellent, even burn throughout the life of the cigar.

On the nose, this cigar offers a plethora of pre-light and cold draw flavors that you will immediately recognize as being a part of the Opus X line. The cold notes of the cigar are sweet and spicy, as you might have come to expect from an Opus X cigar.

It is a wonderfully complex and powerful cigar, and as you enjoy it and it develops it will reveal flavors of spices including pepper, as well as notes of brown sugar and molasses, leather, and earth. As it progresses through its life you may come to notice more powerful, but hardly oppressive, tones of chocolate, even coffee. All of this will arise without losing its base of peppery sweetness. As we stated, it is a cigar that you must try at least once, like all of these Arturo Fuente cigars.

Regardless of which if any of these cigars you decide to try, or all of them, you will not be displeased. Even if it is only an experience to be had for its own sake, it is one that will aggrandize your experience and refine your tastes.
