REVIEW: Alec Bradley Black Market Filthy Hooligan Shamrock Barber Pole
I have a whole raft of untried Alec Bradley cigars resting in the humidor, awaiting review this summer, but this particular cigar warrants an early peek. [insert story of St. Patrick's Day limited edition here] Core Tobaccos: Honduran and Panamanian Binder: Ecuadorian Sumatra Wrapper: Nicaraguan Habano and Nicaraguan Habano Maduro *and* (probably Nicaraguan) Candella barber pole Not surprisingly for an Alan Bradley stogie, this beautifully crafted tri-color stick starts right out like gangbusters (James Cagney-style gangbusters, of course, to keep with the Irish theme). And it just keeps getting better through the first third. After that, welllll... One problem with using three different wrapper leaves is that they burn at three different rates. By the time you get to about halfway, you're correcting just about every puff. And that's a lot of relighting. And while I love me some Honduran tobacco, I don't have much experience with Panamanian, but I kinda think it might out-Nic the Nicaraguans in the bitter aftertaste department. At least in the final third of the Filthy Hooligan. Perhaps that's why they didn't simply call it "The Hooligan"? Like I said, I enjoy Honduran tobacco, even strong Honduran, but I'm not so much a fan of Nicaraguan; those who are would love these more. Anyway, I'll be happy to try this again later this summer with some age on it and see how it fares. Until then, Sláinte!
