- Perhaps the most important part of your cigar storage system is the humidifying device. Maintaining proper humidity will either make or break your humidor system. Cigar humidifying products we carry can be found here... http://www.atlanticcigar.com/goldhumidifier.html
- At 67% a cigar will slowly dry out and loose essential oils. At 74% and higher, organic molecules will break down out-of-order, producing unwanted tastes. More importantly, at 80% or higher, you're leaving your stogies wide open to grow mold. Neither cigars or humidors are a particularly sterile environment. Note that these are relative humidity's
- * We suggest setting the humidity to 68-73%*
- Why use a humidor?
- The purpose of a humidor is to keep your cigars at their peak "smokability". The most crucial characteristic of a fine humidor is that it can provide a constant environment of 70-72% humidity.
- What temperature is best for storage?
- 70 degrees - Although cooler storage temperatures are definitely not a problem for cigars (as long as you maintain a reasonable relative humidity).
- Why do we attempt to keep them at 70 degrees then? The key is in the subtle difference between stable storage and true aging. Your cigars will not age, mature, mellow, or develop the complex character of well cured smokes at lower temperatures. At higher temperatures, there are several insects to worry about. The microscopic eggs of the dreaded tobacco beetle, for instance, hatch at temperatures above 80 degrees.
- If a cigar is properly stored in a humidor, how long will it last?
- Should I remove the cellophane (plastic wrap) / cedar wrapping before I put them in the humidor?
- It depends on personal preference.
- Cigars are transported in cellophane since cellophane protects the cigar from loosing humidity. By removing the cellophane it will allow the cigar to breathe and speed up the aging process. On the other hand, removing the cigar cellophane can expose the cigar to different aromas within the humidor, causing it to obtain different flavors.
- Cigars are also packaged in cedar wrapping which gives the cigar a cedar aroma. Removing this will cause a loss in the intensity of the cedar aroma.
- If a cigar dries out, is it possible to get the taste back?
- If you let a cigar dry out it'll certainly damage it, but it can be recovered by re-humidifying it in a proper humidor. It'll never be quite the same, but cigars will re-humidify far better than others
- What's the difference in taste of cigars from different countries?
- Each country's cigar production has its own taste and character. Cigars are made all over the world, with tobacco grown in different soils, cured by different processes, and rolled with different techniques.
- Cigar Regions
- Dominican Republic-Dominican Republic is a major producer of top quality tobacco. The principal tobacco growing area in the country is the Cibao River Valley area in the northern half of the country near the city of Santiago.
- The Connecticut Valley-The Connecticut Valley is a major source of some of the world's finest wrapper leaves. This golden colored wrapper tobacco is highly regarded and praised by many cigar makers and connoisseurs. Connecticut Shade, which emanated from the Hazelwood strain of Cuban seed, is shade-grown under huge tents to protect the delicate leaf. Also from this area is Connecticut Broad Leaf. Grown in the sun, this wrapper tobacco is coarser, darker and produces a sweeter taste.
- Indonesia- Indonesia has gained an excellent reputation for wrapper tobacco. It is dark, tasty, and fragile in nature. In recent years, special strains of Java married with Connecticut tobacco have been cultivated with particular emphasis on the process of fermentation to produce a rich, flavorful and fine burning wrapper and binder tobacco. Grown under shade, it is commonly referred to as TBN.
- Mexico-Most Mexican cigars are made with 100% Mexican grown tobacco. The San Andreas valley is world-famous for producing a sun-grown variety of Sumatra-seed tobacco - called Mexican Sumatra. This is used for wrappers. Dark Tobacco, used for long fillers and binders, is also grown here. It is the finest burning tobacco grown, and gives the cigar a distinctive sweet, peppery, light texture. Mexican wrapper leaves are often used as maduro wrappers.
- Honduras- Honduras produces quality Cuban seed and Connecticut seed tobaccos, both full bodied, with strong, spicy flavor and heady aroma. The Connecticut seed is shade-grown in Honduras and is similar to Connecticut grown shade leaf tobacco.
- Brazil- Tobacco from Brazil tends to be dark, rich and smooth with a slightly sweet flavor. In fact, the Brazilian tobacco leaves are a deep brown after fermentation.
- Cuba- Cuban tobacco is acknowledged as some of the finest tobacco. The primary tobacco growing region is the legendary Vuelta Abajo area of the Pinar del Rio province in the western part of the country. Because of the take-over by Fidel Castro and the subsequent U.S. embargo in 1963, Cuban-grown tobaccos are not used in cigars sold in the United States.
- Cigar History
- The year was 1492. Christopher Columbus not only discovered a New World, but a wonderful new enjoyment that is delighting connoisseurs throughout the entire world to this day: Tobacco.
- From tobacco, came the cigar, and with it the unprecedented popularity that spread throughout Europe and the United States, attracting presidents, kings, generals, gentlemen, and a fair number of women. In fact, in 1900 an estimated four out of five men in the U.S. were cigar smokers.
- Cuba led the way in the cigar industry. Early in the 16th century, Cuban peasants became tobacco growers. Later, the cigar became the country's national symbol and the Havana cigar became recognized as the world's finest.
- The take-over by Fidel Castro and the subsequent U.S. embargo were the start of events that began to challenge Havana's supremacy in the world of cigars. Former Cuban cigar-makers took their skills and seeds to the Caribbean, Dominican Republic, Honduras and Mexico and began producing high-quality premium and super-premium cigars for the American public.
- Today, the pure pleasures of the premium cigar are all the rage. Cigars handmade by experts from a choice blend of top-quality tobaccos and aged to perfection are referred to as premium cigars.
- The Dominican Republic alone produces almost half of the hand-made cigars sold in the U.S.
- Cigar smoking has burgeoned. Celebrities, industry leaders, politicians, sophisticated women and men are seen at dinners and at smoking clubs enjoying luxury cigars. The cigar is alive and well, and here to stay.
